- Carbon (C): The carbon content in Cr12MoV steel is around 1.45% – 1.70%. High carbon content provides high hardness and wear – resistance. It is a key factor in determining the steel’s ability to maintain its shape and cutting edge under heavy loads and abrasive conditions.
- Chromium (Cr): The chromium content is approximately 11.00% – 12.50%. Chromium is a crucial alloying element that enhances the steel’s hardenability and corrosion – resistance. It forms stable chromium carbides during heat treatment, which contribute to the steel’s high hardness and wear – resistance.
- Molybdenum (Mo): The molybdenum content is usually 0.40% – 0.60%. Molybdenum helps to improve the steel’s hardenability, toughness, and resistance to tempering. It also has a positive effect on the steel’s resistance to thermal fatigue and wear, especially at elevated temperatures.
- Vanadium (V): The vanadium content is about 0.15% – 0.30%. Vanadium forms fine carbides during heat treatment, which can refine the steel’s microstructure. These carbides also increase the steel’s hardness, wear – resistance, and resistance to deformation.
- Silicon (Si): The silicon content is generally less than 0.40%. Silicon acts as a deoxidizer during the steel – making process and can also slightly improve the steel’s strength and hardness.

- High Hardness and Wear – Resistance:Cr12MoV steel is well – known for its excellent hardness and wear – resistance. After proper heat treatment, such as quenching and tempering, it can reach a very high hardness level (usually above HRC60). This makes it ideal for applications where tools or dies need to cut, shape, or form hard materials. For example, it is widely used in cold – working dies for stamping, blanking, and deep – drawing operations. - Good Hardenability:The alloying elements in Cr12MoV steel, especially chromium, molybdenum, and vanadium, endow it with good hardenability. The good hardenability allows for more flexibility in the design and manufacturing of tools and dies.
